Radon enters through the points where a home contacts the soil: cracks in a concrete slab, gaps around a sump pump, joints in basement walls, and openings around pipes and drains below grade. A basement is essentially a large surface area of the home pressed directly against radon-producing soil, with multiple entry points. That’s why basements consistently show the highest radon readings in a house.
